My name is Ander, my pronouns are he/him, and I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Hispanic Linguistics, Romance Linguistics, and Second Language Acquisition & Teacher Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). I am also an ACTFL OPI Tester candidate for Spanish. I am from Azpeitia, in the Basque Country (north of Spain). I have been a Graduate Instructor for five years in the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese, where I have taught courses on Spanish, Hispanic Linguistics, and Basque Language and Culture (see 'Teaching' for more info).
Academically, my personal experiences as a bilingual speaker of Basque and Spanish since childhood have driven my research projects. I am interested in acoustic and articulatory phonetics, (laboratory) phonology, bilingual speech production and perception, heritage language phonology, phonemic mergers, the acquisition of pronunciation in the classroom, and Basque and Spanish dialectology (see my 'Research' section for more info).
My dissertation is being supervised by José Ignacio Hualde and Ryan Shosted, and it aims to better understand the range of bidirectional acquisition of coarticulatory patterns in first/heritage and second languages by early and late bilinguals, and to propose a new phonological model to account for such type of acquisition.
In the non-academic aspect, one of my passions is traveling. I love visiting new places and learning about their cultures and languages. I have been to several countries in Europe, Asia, and North America. In every trip I make, I always bring souvenirs like postcards, hundreds of pictures, or linguistic information of local languages from there. I can't wait to explore more places once COVID-19 is more under control! (see my 'Travels' section for more info).
When I am not teaching, doing research, or traveling, I enjoy serving the community. In the past, I have served as the President of the Spanish and Portuguese Graduate Organization, as a Graduate College Senator, and as a mentor in La Casa Cultural Latina. I have advocated for a more accessible and navigable school experience (see 'Service' and 'Resources' for more info).
The passion I put in many aspects of my life has allowed me to receive severals awards (see 'Awards' for more info).
